Pen and ink drawing, comic strips and sketchbooks
I have made various diary comics over the years. It started in 1998 when I moved to Goathland, North Yorkshire. I used them as a way of doing daily drawings, in a familiar format, documenting my new life, communicating the wilderness of my circumstances of living on a
farm to family and friends back home. They were supposed to be quick, end of the day type pages. They inevitably expanded into something more detailed than the individual part. Daily pages quickly accumulating with the minutiae and mundanity of everyday life.
Imagination is an important part of my work, mixing fact and fiction to make it seem that little bit more accurate and entertaining to the reader. All part of the storyteller that lurks, hiding inside me. I used to publish the comics but not so much these days.
“Click here if you want to see more samples of the diary comics I’ve made over the years. The original Goathland Diary is missing and I can’t find any scans I did for the Mammoth Book of Cult Comics.”
“ Having never read Bram Stoker’s Dracula, I thought it about time to remedy the situation by reading it and drawing a chapter of the book every day over a period of 27 (ish) consecutive days.”
“I am a true believer when it comes to the creative power of keeping a sketchbook. I do lapse and get caught up in real life and always regret it. The practice of doing something regularly is key.”
